Curator's Note

If you know Mr. Masahiro Ishizuka by name, you may be veteran Luftwaffe-fan.
For me (and perhaps for you too), this G-10 which appeared on "Model Art" magazine in 1984 and the G-10 (Muller's green 3) which appeared on the same magazine in 1986 were quite a shock. They showed me such a profound documentation which had never appeared in Japanese publication before and his skillful art building accurate models based on the documentation. The amount of his skill and work for building Revell's G-10 which is not so easy to build as recently released Hasegawa's kit were very impressive. In retrospect, it seems 1980s are the golden age of the "Model Art" magazine featuring many skilful modelers including Mr. Ishizuka. It is regrettable that Mr. Ishizuka has not contributed articles on magazines for years, but it is my great pleasure to reproduce his article here by courtesy of Mr. Ishizuka and Model Art Ltd. and by friends' help. Reading the article now, I am surprised to find out the value of his documentation and work has not faded by years passed by. Mr. Koichiro Abe's recent articles on research of Bf 109 which have appeared in "Scale Aviation" magazine have revealed us many new findings, but Mr. Ishizuka's work has represented many of them in 1984. Maybe Mr. Ishizuka's work was representation of Mr. Abe's research in 1/48 scale. Top photo taken by Mr. Toshio Ookura is also once top cover of "Model Art" magazine and for me it is one of the best cover photos.
I wish you enjoy this vintage of modeling.

About the ace

The JG 52, most successful Geshwerder of the Luftwaffe, is famous in producing many aces, for example Hartmann, Barkhorn, Rall, Batz, Graf, Lipfert and so on. Less famous are those aces like D殳tmann (152 kills), Waldmann (134 kills), Sachsenberg (104 kills) and Ewald who is featured here, but they are also noteworthy.
Heiz "Esau" Ewald was born at Sopot near Danzig on 11 September 1922. He was posted 5/JG 52 in summer of 1943 and from then until the end of the war he fought on the eastern front. He was excellent pilot and has flown as Barkhorn's wingman for long time. On 29 December 1944, he scored 50th kill in Hungary, and was awarded RitterKreuz after scoring his 82nd kill on 20 April 1945. His total score is 84 kills in 396 sorties.
When he was rising as ace, Germany was loosing war, and he himself narrowly escaped death several times. Maybe his luck owed to his talisman, Lucky Pig (his personal marking).
He flew exclusively Bf 109s. His personal marking on G-6 are appeared on some references already. Recently, his G-10 was discovered only partially, which was his mount between beginning of 1945 and the end of the war. Therefore some of painting and marking are result of conjugation.
